Sega giving away Columns on iPhone for free all this weekend |
|
Jul 04, 2009 - 5:09 AM - by IPT2G32GBJB
|
Normally we'd just send out a tweet about this (that's usually what we do with free app deals, so if you're not one of the almost 40,000 people following us yet, you definitely should be), but this is a good one, and it's a holiday, so we wanted to make sure you knew. Sega is feeling particularly generous this weekend, so they're giving away free copies of their Columns Deluxe, a port of the old Genesis game, for the iPhone. The game is a pretty straightforward port -- it doesn't have any extras, and the accelerometer controls are a little tacked on from what we hear, but if you like the puzzler gameplay of Columns, and you should, it's a fun one to pull up for a few minutes at a time.
Plus, it's free -- from July 3rd to Monday, July 6th, Sega says it'll be on sale for... [Read More]

Prototype iPhone 3GS on eBay? (No, No Matte Case) [Updated] |
|
Jul 04, 2009 - 2:26 AM - by jhay
|

Cult of Mac reports on a "sketch-looking" non functional white iPhone that is being sold on eBay as a prototype iPhone 3GS.
The seller says theres a problem with restoring the software: This device is not eligible for the requested build, iTunes says when he tries to restore it.
The seller, vofffka, of Ocean City, New Jersey, says an Apple genius at his local retail store verified the iPhone as an Apple product, but cant service it, because its never been sold.
For those curious, the additional photos of the device's casing show that it does not have the rumored matte case that was thought to be destined for the iPhone 3GS. We can't be sure the auction is real, but prototype Apple devices have been known to find their way onto eBay. A prototype of... [Read More]

Jailbroken iPhones - Security Risk? |
|
Jul 04, 2009 - 2:22 AM - by jhay
|

Turns out that if you jailbreak your iPhone you remove most of the Apple’s security protections — 80% to be exact — and are vulnerable to attacks. At least according to Charlie Miller:
“If you care about security, don’t use a jailbroken iPhone,” Miller, speaking at SyScan in Singapore, believes that by jailbreaking you open your device some major risks. The operating system on an iPhone is basically a watered down version of Mac OS X. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Macs, Mac OS X is the latest OS that Apple computers run. Macs are generally known for pretty risk-free machines with a few exceptions. Those exceptions being Java, Adobe Flash, and PDF files. The major risk on the iPhone is opening your device up to any application available on Cydia/Icy. iPhones will generally only run applications that are digitally signed by Apple, this is not the case when jailbroken. So if you don’t know what you are installing, there is a possibility you can be in for a world of hurt.
Of course just a few hours ago Rene told you about the huge ... [Read More]

3GS jailbreak released |
|
Jul 03, 2009 - 9:18 AM - by maymoon
|

Yes, this is what you've all been waiting for. A Jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS. And it's awesome. To get started right now, go to purplera1n.com. Download it. Make sure you have windows(but not 7), the latest iTunes installed, and an iPhone 3GS with 3.0 firmware. Connect your iPhone normally. Click "make it ra1n". Wait. On bootup, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app. Hopefully you'll figure out what to do from there. Best tutorial gets linked to from purplera1n site. This tool is beta. Make sure to have everything backed up before running. Also if Cydia doesn't show up after running Freeze, reboot.

Apple released Firmware 3.1 beta earlier this week reveling new features. Here we have what iPhone 4.0 may bring with it. Some new patent applications include event-based modes, scheduled and intelligent communications.

Event-based modes: As shown by above picture, your iPhone 4.0 device could be able to automatically adapt to different locations and life events and reconfigure it’s settings – e.g. switch the sound off and turn on a voicemail when calendar shows that you are in the meeting.

3GS -- ultrasn0w style! |
|
Jul 03, 2009 - 7:18 AM - by Quark0ne
|
Do not upgrade to 3.1 yet if you want this unlock!
Here’s a brief video demonstration by @planetbeing of the iPhone Dev Team’s ultrasn0w unlock for the new iPhone 3G S. Special thanks to @Oranav for the at+xlog crash — a gift to the community that has kept on giving!
Our uses the at+xlog crash as an injection vector of our unlocking payload — and it does so on the 3GS in exactly the same way as on the 3G! But this injection vector will be lost if you update to 3.1 using the official Apple IPSW, which updates the baseband. So stay away from official 3.1 IPSWs until we release the tools that let you update the firmware without updating the baseband.

Apple developing "active packaging" for iPods and iPhones |
|
Jul 03, 2009 - 2:01 AM - by jhay
|
Known for thinking outside the box, electronics maker Apple Inc. is now apparently working on an in-the-box concept that could provide power to iPods, iPhones and other electronics devices still inside their retail packaging, allowing them to display demo videos and receive firmware updates while hanging unopened on a shelf in a retail store.
In a new patent filing discovered this week by AppleInsider, the Cupertino-based company notes that traditional packaging for an electronic media devices includes plastic or cardboard containers and boxes that house the electronic media device. The outside of the container or box is typically printed with various labels, advertising, device specifications, and other useful information that allows the consumer to make an informed decision whether or not to purchase the electronic media device.
Meanwhile, the inside of the device packaging is typically designed to securely house the electronic media device, where the main design consideration may be to prevent damage to the device during shipping, storage, or consumer handling. And although this typical packaging for an electronic media device may be designed to adequately protect the device from shock or damage, the packaging is extremely limited in other respects.
"For example, the ability to fully view or interact with the electronic media device while still inside the packaging is severely limited in most packaging... [Read More]

iPhone is humongous for AT&T
by Mel Martin on Jul 2nd 2009
Mac Daily News and other sources are reporting today on a leaked AT&T memo that states that the company retail stores had their best day ever with the launch of the iPhone 3GS.
"iLaunch day 2009 was one for the record books, as AT&T customers scrambled to get their hands on the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet.
Here's a look at some of the milestones we achieved:
* Best-ever sales day in our retail stores
* Second-largest traffic day in our retail stores
* Most transactions processed via our IT systems in a single day
* Most upgrade eligibility checks in a single day
* Largest order day in att.com history
* Largest features sales day in att.com history
On this year's launch day, iPhone sales exceeded sales recorded on 2008's iPhone launch day, Black Friday 2008 and Dec. 26,... [Read More]

iPhone 3GS Is Indeed Seeing Red |
|
Jul 02, 2009 - 9:45 PM - by IPT2G32GBJB
|
Gavor from FrenchiPhone could confirm earlier report of white iPhone 3GS turning "red" after having been used intensively. It does not seem that the device was overheating, as we have experienced iPhone 3G enclosure getting hotter when intensively used. Apple did not really officially communicate about this issue, but it should come in a near future as similar reports have already been posted. So it is either a production batch problem, then it will be fixed soon, or some components included in the white enclosure are turning red upon heavy thermal exposure (something not reported with the white iPhone 3G) and this is a more time-consuming issue.

iPhone 3GS Used to Film Music Video: Technologic Overkill |
|
Jul 02, 2009 - 9:20 PM - by IPT2G32GBJB
|
Not to be confused with the first music video about the iPhone 3GS (”Got My Mac on With iPhone 3GS“), the first video purportedly shot using the camera on the new device is making its way around the web. The video – “Technologic Overkill” – is directed by filmmaker Steve Ellington, and shows “the plight of a little blue robot and his attempt to be relevant in an increasingly technological world,” set to a song by the band XFYA. Check it out below:
As we recently noted, mobile video certainly seems to be at a tipping point, with dozens of services offering apps to get your video from your phone to the Web, and YouTubeYouTube seeing a huge upswing in mobile uploads since the iPhone 3GS launched. Technologic Overkill is perhaps a small symbol of this movement, in what will likely be just one of many firsts that we see as... [Read More]

When your phone rings, the copyright police may come calling |
|
Jul 02, 2009 - 9:15 PM - by IPT2G32GBJB
|

A digital rights group is contesting a U.S. music industry association's assertion that royalties are due each time a mobile phone ringtone is played in public. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) filed suit against AT&T asserting that ringtones qualify as a public performance under the Copyright Act. ASCAP, which has 350,000 members, collects royalties and licenses public performances of works under copyright.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), however, asserts that copyright law exempts performances made “without any purpose of direct or indirect commercial advantage,” which would include a ringtone heard in a restaurant.
The organization further argued that the move by ASCAP could jeopardize consumer rights and increase costs for consumers. The EFF filed an amicus brief for the case on Wednesday in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The Center for Democracy and Technology and Public Knowledge also joined the brief.
“These wrongheaded legal claims cast a shadow over innovators who... [Read More]

Jailbroken iPhones leave users more vulnerable |
|
Jul 02, 2009 - 9:07 PM - by IPT2G32GBJB
|
Jailbreaking an iPhone leaves users vulnerable to attack by stripping away most of the handset’s security protections, a security researcher warned Thursday.
“If you care about security, don’t use a jailbroken iPhone,” said security researcher Charlie Miller, speaking at the SyScan security conference in Singapore on Thursday.
Jailbreaking is a term used to describe the process of stripping away the protections that prevent a user from installing applications on an iPhone that have not been digitally signed by Apple. Jailbreaking tools have been popular among users in the U.S. and elsewhere who do not want to be tied to a specific operator, or who want to add software or capabilities to the phone that Apple doesn’t offer.
The process removes around 80 percent of the security protections built into the phone’s software, making it more vulnerable, Miller said.
Overall, the stripped-down version of Mac OS X used in the... [Read More]

Apple's iPhone Executes SMS Binary Code as Root, Fix Won't Come Until End of Month |
|
Jul 02, 2009 - 9:06 PM - by IPT2G32GBJB
|
IPhone SMS vulnerability could allow malicious users to install and execute malware
Recently, Apple has struggled with the security ramifications of a higher commercial profile, and seeing an increasing number of OS X malware. Now another security flaw has been found, this time in the iPhone OS. The flaw allows attackers to gain root access to the iPhone's underlying OS, allowing them to install and execute malicious programs at will.
The iPhone apparently automatically executes binary code sent in SMS messages. Messages are limited to 140 bytes, but this is little deterrence as longer programs can be broken up into several messages, which the phone automatically reassembles. While other applications such as the Safari browser on the phone only enjoy access to their sandbox, the SMS system is automatically granted root access, and SMS commands execute as root. ... Nude 15-Year-Olds In The App Store? Yes There Is |
|
Jul 02, 2009 - 12:16 PM - by jhay
|
(update: July 2 at 2:00 a.m. PST – click here for details)

Last week, a sexy bikini chick app made quite the splash in iPhone App World. The Hottest Girls application made Apple history by becoming the first iPhone app to contain nudity. But that was only the beginning of the iPhone Spice drama, requiring us to cover (no pun intended) the Hottest Girls saga in two articles (article #1 – article #2). In summary … the developer pulled the app due to overwhelming sales, then Apple said bullshit – they actually removed the app, then Apple shut down all the developer’s apps, then the developer closed his web site seemingly hiding from angry paying customers (does Apple refund their money?) … LOL, gotta love Apple drama.
Apple even released a statement via spokesman Tom Neumayer saying … “Apple will not... [Read More]

Haptic Feedback, Fingerprint Identification, and RFID Tag Readers in Future iPhones? |
Jul 02, 2009 - 11:18 AM - by jhay
|
Apple has let loose a number of revealing new patent applications that cover some interesting technologies that could be used in future iPhones.
Haptic Tactile Feedback
Perhaps most interesting amongst the patent applications is the acknowledgement by Apple that despite the many advantages of the iPhone's multi-touch screen, a lack of tactile feedback remains its biggest disadvantage:
However, one of a touchscreen's biggest advantages (i.e., the ability to utilize the same physical space for different functions) is also one of a touchscreen's biggest disadvantages. When the user is unable to view the display (because the user is occupied with other tasks), the user can only feel the smooth hard surface of the touchscreen, regardless of the shape, size and location of the virtual buttons and/or other display elements. This makes it difficult for users to find icons, hyperlinks, textboxes or other user-selectable input elements that are being displayed, if any are even being displayed, without looking at the display.

Unless touch input components are improved, users that, ... [Read More]

Apple to Rate Your Karaoke Singing on Your iPhone? |
|
Jul 02, 2009 - 11:16 AM - by jhay
|

Apple has published a very interesting patent application in which they explore how to provide a Karaoke experience on the iPhone. Not only would users be able to sing along with their favorite songs, but Apple wants to give real-time feedback to singers letting them know how they are doing.
The systems and methods for providing users with real-time feedback while they are singing on key/pitch and providing real-time feedback to the user while the karaoke song is being sung. The feedback will be positive feedback if user is on key/pitch and it will be negative feedback if user is off key/pitch.
The patent application addresses "one of the biggest obstacles faced by amateur sings: singing on key/pitch". Apple suggests that this system could actually improve the quality of people's singing. One novel way to accomplish this would be to measure the pitch of the singer's voice... [Read More]
